Concerned Givers Help Raise an Army

L-R: Steve and Darlene Baker, Alison and Jim Jaksa, and Major Brian Burkett

The Salvation Army is recognized and honored for providing the basic necessities of life to some of the most vulnerable members of our society. Who is there for the Army when it needs support?

Many times over the years, generous individuals wanted to make a donation to the Unity Foundation to help provide long term support for the Salvation Army in Michigan City. But it wasn't possible. No one had stepped forward to establish a fund through Unity.

In 2008, those lost opportunities became regained opportunities when the two endowment funds were established. The Salvation Army Endowment Fund will help support the day-to-day work. The Salvation Army of Michigan City Major Building Repairs Fund will provide for major building repairs and equipment replacement.

Steve Baker and his wife Darlene established the first fund. Steve was an Army board member. He said, "We started the fund to keep the plight of The Salvation Army's continual struggle to help our neediest in the hearts and minds of those more fortunate. People can now help 'forever' in addition to helping today.'"

Long-time supporters Jim and Alison Jaksa started the Building Maintenance Fund. Jim said, "We realize that the maintenance of their building is essential for the Salvation Army to continue its service to Michigan City. This fund will ensure that monies will be available to make the necessary major building repairs when the need arises without having to use money from the Salvation Army regular operating funds."

The Army saluted these civilian efforts. "These two endowment funds will assure that our endeavors to improve the quality of life of thousands of less fortunate individuals and families will continue today, tomorrow and well into the future," said Major Brian Burkett, who was leading The Michigan City Salvation Army when the Fund was created.
